Full Time Work and the Job Search

When searching for a full time job, there are a number of terms and practices that you should be familiar with. Some of these will just be straight definitions of the terms while others will be short explanations of the practices involved.

Use this list as a reference tool to expand your knowledge of the job market.

o Behavioral Interviewing: This is when an interviewer asks you about certain situations in your past that can give him/her a clue as to how you will respond in the future. For example, an interviewer may ask, "Tell me about a time when you made a mistake and what you did to fix it." Your answer will inform the interviewer about what to expect from you should you be hired.

o Cold Call: Normally associated with sales work, the term "cold call" means that you get in touch with somebody whom you do not know and don't have any mutual acquaintances with. You can use this to develop more contacts, and this is an important strategy to use when your existing network of contacts has dried up.

o Elevator Speech: Sometimes called a pitch, the elevator speech is a prepared presentation that highlights your skills and experience. It is named after the hypothetical situation of getting into an elevator with a potential employer and having the length of the ride to pitch yourself for a position. Make this short and to the point.

o Headhunter: Also known as an independent recruiter who works to develop potential employees and sets them up with employers. These people could be helpful to your job search, but make sure you know the exact details of what you could owe that person should they find you a job. There are no set standards for the independent recruiter profession, so quality of recruiters can vary greatly.

o Screening Interview: Also called a telephone interview, a potential hirer will usually call an applicant on the phone and have a brief discussion. These conversations usually include clarifications about certain points on your resume and also questions to determine how good of a fit you would be for the position. The employer's goal is to weed out those unfit for the job, your goal is to get an in-person meeting.

o TMAY: The "Tell Me About Yourself" question. See Elevator Speech above for how to prepare for it.
