When the Proverbial Happens - How to Bounce Back

You Get Fired

Do not go around with your face tripping you, feeling down in the gutter. Be honest and upbeat, say to yourself this was a disappointment but this is what I am going to do about it. It is better to face it head on. Rejection is never easy, think honestly about why you were fired. Maybe there is a downturn in your market, maybe you were spending too much time on the internet, perhaps you were not being productive because you were bored or had outgrown your position. Look at it objectively, once you remove emotion you can learn a lot. For lots of people being fired can be the best thing to happen because they use the situation to think creatively about their career and what they want from it.

You Get Dumped

Being dumped by the love of your life is one of the hardest knock backs of them all. But there is a fine line between obsessing and reflecting. You need to confront it and allow yourself the grieving process. Limit yourself by trying to put a cap on it, giving yourself a little time each day. For the rest of the time start thinking about your future, this does not include jumping into bed with the first person who smiles your way. That kind of quick fix does nothing to help the situation it just prolongs it because you do not feel good about yourself. In time you will begin to feel semi human again and will allow yourself to start the dating process, but that will not happen until you have gone through the healing process. Remember some things in life are just way out of your control and someone falling out of love with you is not your fault, surround yourself with good friends and family, but remember not to dump them the next time you meet the love of your life.

You Hate Your Job

Monday mornings make you cry in despair, you cannot stand the thought of another motivational speech by your boss. First question to ask yourself, do you hate your job, your boss or your career choice? Think about what really motivates you, is it the money, the independence or the prospects. Think about what accomplishments you had the most compliments about, Ask friends and family what they love about their jobs. Create a list of possible new careers or discuss your ideas and skills with a recruitment consultant who will be able to give you more advice on what is available or what you are most suited to.

Give yourself a career MOT sporadically and ask yourself where you want to be in six, twelve or eighteen months time, don't procrastinate, initiate.

Your Flat Broke

You are not alone. The recent credit crunch means it has never been harder to manage your finances. But even if money or the lack of it has been getting you down it is very important not to bury your head in the sand. If you have credit cards, moving the balance to a company offering zero percent interest rate can be a good place to start.

Make a packed lunch for work and stop buying take out cappuccinos. Read the newspaper online and shop late in the evening to take advantage of the marked down prices.

Often it is the little expenses or extravagances that can add up over the course of a month and can turn into major expenses. Make a list of all expenditure you have and see where you can cut back.

Try getting back on your feet and start to save a little bit each month in a high savings account.

Be prepared for the next rainy day.
